Business Networks

Small to Medium sized Business Servers

Computer Support (Nottingham) Ltd - PC Doctor can offer a Business Server to meet your needs.  The Servers are based on Intel Pentium processors.

New Servers have the software pre-installed, configured and tested at our workshop. We normally test for 5 to 10 days before the server is installed.  At this point we can also install any other software applications that you may have.

Our servers are based on Duel or single Intel e.g. Xeon or AMD processors

The server has built in redundancy, the hard drives are mirrored, or RAID should one fail you can keep working. The failed drive is replaced and the array rebuilds its self keeping down time to a minimum. Dual power supplies or the addition of uninterruptible power supply. Should you have a power cut the ups will kick in giving you an audible warning will also keeping the server running for an amount of time allowing for data to be saved before you shut down the server safely.

Operating system:  Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Standard or Premium Editions

(5 User Licence).   Microsoft Extra licences are available in packs of 5 if required. Other versions are available..

Antivirus:  Server based protection which is continually updating and protects server and client computers on the network - if you use MS Exchange add on or different version may be required.
AVG Network addition
Symantec (Norton) SBS Products
McAfee

Critical Data Backup:  These days data is extremely important to any business therefore, backup is essential and we recommend that this should be carried out daily.
We recommend: if you use MS Exchange add on or different version may be required.
Veritas Exec 10d SBS
CA Britestore
Dantz Retrospect
Backups can be done on various media storage types.  These include:
CD
DVD - using 2  external Hard drives
Seagate Travan tape drive using daily cassette tapes
external "Network Attached Storage" (NAS) system.
The system you chose depends on the amount of data your company creates.

Network upgrades: from 100base to 1000gb. this will speed up network performance

Network attached Storage (NAS) There are many reasons for having simple, cost effective central storage. Loss of critical data can bring a company to a standstill. If your computer fails it’s no problem because your data and working files are safe on the NAS. All you need to do is use one of the other computers on the network and access the NAS and your working again.  An office-based NAS can be quickly installed allowing use as a document library, print server, backup device, ‘shared’ drive etc. You can set individual User Accounts with passwords, so that users data and backups are kept secure, you can create groups with access rights, The device can be added to an existing server based network giving greater capacity for data storage.
On-site Installation:  This will be carried out by one of our Microsoft Certified engineer and will usually consist of:
New Company Network - Installation of all cabling - hardware and software e.g. Server and Computer configuration, printers - Internet etc.  Training will also be given to users of the network.  Network security (User access)

Existing Networks - Installation will cover attaching the server to your existing network, the migration of existing company data and software from old to new server.  Configuring existing computers and printers to work with the new server and testing.  We are happy to install at a time to minimise disruption to your business, for example, at a weekend .
Your existing workstation/server will run in tandem until we are happy, then we will move over to the new server. We will do our best to maintain essential business services at all times.

Other Services include:
Remote server management:  This would allow Computer Support (Nottingham) Ltd to access the server from our workshop.  We can:
  • Perform software updates
  • Add remove users and alter permissions
  • Monitor daily backups, anti virus and general performance of the server.
  • If you have a problem on your network all you need to do is call us.
This can minimise down time and cost of engineer call out. This is only done with your permission and is a secure connection.

Disaster Recovery:  Computer Support (Nottingham) Ltd - PC Doctor backs up your Server on a regular basis, 6 monthly or quarterly.  This along with daily backups should ensure that, should it fail, your server can be back in service as quickly as possible.

Home Network

Networking - for your home

2. Internet or file sharing at home, wired or wireless, Wifi Printing.
3. Wireless print server, Network Security - stop intruders from accessing your network.
4. Network upgrades from 100base to 1000gb which will speed up network performance.
5. Data cabling.
6. Network Attached Storage Device for the advanced home user (see more details below)

Network attached Storage (NAS)
Computer Support (Nottingham) Ltd - PC Doctor
can offer a network storage device, which is suitable for the home. The device means you can share a large or small amount of digital data on your home network. Features include:
  • Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Two or more internal Serial ATA mirrored hard drives.  NAS system has two or more hard drives that use RAID.  This means that the date is spanned across all the drives.  If one should fail, the data is still safe. By replacing the failed drive(s) the data is then re built across all drives.
  • Capacity is dependant on your requirement however, one terabyte is a normal size.
  • SATA gives greater data transfer speeds, at an affordable price.
Reasons for having such a Device - Since the advent of digital cameras and MP3 players people are taking more photos and downloading more music onto their computers and there they stay as most do not backup.  If the computer crashes all those valuable photos and music could be lost forever, we have seen it happen so many times here at Computer Support (Nottingham)
Ltd. With a NAS you can store your photos and music and it will be backed up regularly.  This also applies to all your other valuable documents such as:

  • Address book
  • Emails
  • Word documents
  • Spreadsheet
  • Database files.
  • Children school work
  • University course work
  • Household accounts

Data Retrieval example
If your computer fails you may not have lost all your valuable personal data stored on the hard disc. It may be possible to recover some or all of it depending on the problem. Remember it is always a good idea to keep regular backups. There are several methods and we can advise you. If your computer fails there are usually 3 options:
1. Standard - This is when the hard disc is OK but another part of the computer has failed.
We can remove data and transfer it onto a CD, DVD or another hard disc drive.
2. Special -The hard disc is not working correctly e.g. FAT/NTFS partition or software is corrupt.
We use very specialist software to recover some or all of your data. This is usually very successful.
3. Recovery Specialist - If the hard disc has totally failed then we can send the hard drive away where it is taken apart in a clean room (Laboratory).  The data may then be recovered but it's not guaranteed. This option can be expensive and only you can decide if the data is important enough. Usually only businesses want to do this in order to recover critical data.
Data Transfer.
If you have purchased a new computer and want your personal data transferring from your old computer onto the new one we can help you. This could be: Text Documents, Pictures, Spreadsheets, Databases, Emails, address book etc.  We can either transfer the data onto a CD or straight onto the new computers hard disc.  You may also have software applications that you need installing onto your new computer.
Computer Support (Nottingham) Ltd - PC Doctor can install this onto your new computer
subject to software compatibility and that you have licensed software.  For example,
software that worked on Windows 98 may not work on Windows XP vista or windows 7.
